timesaver traffic. charlie over to you. you expect them to be safe this morning. now one county district says it's going to make some big changes to make sure your kids can be safe every day. abc2 news linda so is live this morning in perry hall high school and linda, what is this new policy they're putting in place? >> reporter: well, starting today every school resource officer in baltimore county will have access to a hand held metal detacting wand. in response to recent school violence. you'll remember the shooting that happened here on the first day roll school when a student -- of school when a student brought a gun to school and shot another student. they won't be used for random searches, only if they have reasonable suspicion that someone in the school has a weapon. the police chief says it's part of the solution to keeping kids safe in school. recent instances prompted this change. of course the shooting here at perry hall high. another scare at stemmers run middle school. and then just this week, a bb gun was found at owings mills

high. parents seem to be on board with the new policy. >> i think it's a good idea. kids should be able to be safe. >> we do need to be extra vigilant and do what we need to do to make sure we protect the children and n school and make it -- in school and make a safe environment for them. >> reporter: so when your kids go to school this morning, this new policy will be in effect. school resource officers will have metal detecting wands and they'll use them if they think a student has a weapon. we're live in perry hall, linda so, abc2 news. the tragedy is still hard to come to grips with. imagine the pain of losing five family members at once. well, today loved ones will gather to say their final good- byes to a grandmother and her four grandchildren killed in a fire last week in northeast baltimore. the memorial service begins at 10:00 this morning at mount pleasant church. funeral services will immediately follow. delaney valley memorial gardens donated five plots to help out the family. 19 people have now died in

the meningitis outbreak. maryland has one confirmed death and 16 reports cased. nationwide 247 people have become sick. the rare form of meningitis is now being traced back to shots for back pain. the government is investigating that massachusetts pharmacy that made the steroid injections. well, the man who wants to be baltimore's top cop is expected to be confirmed come monday. yesterday evening anthony batts answered questions from city council members and also listened to concern from the public. they expressed concerns about community policing, foot patrols and strained relations with officers and neighbors within the community. the commissioner designate says he is prepared. >> we will work diligently to earn your trust. we will be professional, we will be courteous, and we will treat people with respect and expect the same in return. >> batts was a former police chief in long beach, california as well as in oakland. well, lawsuits now in the

severe weather rolled through parking lots of western -- parts of western tennessee last night. take a look at this. strong thunderstorms brought with it heavy rain, wind and lightning. this just outside of memphis. there was damage now caused fallen trees on home. however no word of injuries

breast cancer is a life- altering event. this morning kelly swoope tells us about two women on a mission supporting survivors. >> let's go in the back and i'm going to help you. >> reporter: help is exactly what breast cancer survivors like judy are looking for when they turn to bare necessities. in addition to fancy bras and lingerie, lynn and her sister also sell prosthetic breasts and specially made bras for survivors. >> you know you come in, you're not feeling your best and some of these women are going through chemo and radiation. and they just want to get back to their normal lives. they want to get back to work, they want to get back to looking good. >> reporter: judy is living proof. she was diagnosed six years ago. >> need a place that will help you find what you're looking for because you don't know what you're looking for. >> reporter: past the critical five year survivor mark, judy knows in addition to a good bra you need a listening ear. she works with the programs survivors offering support on the eastern shore. >> i have a men tee right now.

and she is in a nearby town and we're not like in the same town. but i'm on the phone to her often. she calls me if she just wants to talk. as she goes through each stage of the treatment process i can tell her what to expect next. >> reporter: it's near and dear to lynn and her family. her mother judy lost the battle with breast cancer six and a half years ago. fighting the disease is something she's done for more than 20 years. >> you'd love to be able to have a cure in our lifetime. >> reporter: judy also hopes for a cure one day soon. until then she's doing what she can to help others and celebrating her personal victory along the way. >> i was in a shop and i saw -- i felt like a girl and one. and i thought that's a shirt for me. >> and that was abc2 news kelly swoope with the report. joining us now the brittany fowler. we're going to be out there all

morning. what can patrons expect when they come out? >> we're hoping for beautiful weather which i think we will get. hopefully. as lynette was saying wear a jacket but it's going to be a wonderful day. we always have the parade of survivors going off around 6:40 a.m. and it's one of the most emotional portions of the morning. you get to see all of them go through the village and then they end on blotchers and take a -- bleachers and take a photo. >> you know every time we come out for one of the events we see the finished product. we're out there for the course sunday morning. you guys are in the home stretch right now at komen maryland. what are some the things you are working on right now? >> right now we're going doing some of -- doing some of the final planning things. we have the registration in hunt valley and that's open from noon to 7:00 p.m. during the weeks. and then on saturday it's open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. really just trying to get the final registrations in there. >> some of the scenes we're seeing of last year's race here, a beautiful sunrise

event. a lot of walkers and runners. men and women supporting this is something where men can come out. you encourage men to come out in support of this. >> we do, we encourage everybody. we have a kids for the cure registration option as well so people can bring out the entire families and really rally around a loved one they know who's been affected by breast cancer. >> toward fundraising for breast cancer research, susan g. komen has seen the numbers down. what can people do if they want to come in? you're taking walk up rexes this year. -- registrations this year. >> as far as fundraising numbers down about 45% and we're making one last appeal to the community because these 75% of the funds stay local. going to grant programs throughout the state. so it's really the money is staying in maryland and we're trying to help maryland women. >> expand on that really quickly. i give you my money, where does it go? how do we see it realized? you said a word there i think is important. it remains local.
